When you're thinking about what kind of quality cat furniture to get, think about what your cat enjoys doing most. Most likely he or she is a scratcher. And undoubtedly sleeping is a favorite past time. Play time is part of every cat's day, no matter how young or old. Some cat furniture has play centers with several levels. Some of this furniture will have small cubbies for a pet to hide. Hammocks for lounging are often included as well as rope or twine to climb on. They are used to climb, scratch, and lounge in a safe and secure environment. Keeping your cat well-behaved and entertained is easy with a new cat condo!

Adding a New Cat to the Family PDF Print E-mail
Sooner of later most pet parents will want to adopt a "fur buddy" for their current fur companion, or just add one to your "family". If this is you, it will cause stress to your present companion. It is easiest to introduce a female kitten to an established cat. However, if you have a senior cat, you should wait until it has passed before trying to introduce an additional cat.

The first step is to consider your current cat's personality and then visit your local no-kill animal rescue/shelter. A rescue that uses "foster homes" will often know more about their cat's personalities and should be able to make a more intelligent match to your present fur buddy. This is not to say other shelters are unable to help. However, often they have not had the intimate one-on-one interactions as "foster homes".

Once you're new fur buddy is home, there are some steps that will speed your ability to introduce him or her to your other cat(s). First, select a room where your new fur buddy can reside. Often, a second bathroom or room with a hard surface floor, just in case there is an "accident" due to the new environment. Whichever room is selected it should include; fresh water, food, litter box and of course a toy or two and some type of cat furniture to climb and hide within.

It is important to spend quality one-on-one time with your new friend. This includes, playing, brushing and calm conversations. Of course your other cat will want to know what is going on behind closed doors. Observe your new cat and see when he or she shows interest in exploring the room beyond. When this happens, allow your new fur buddy to explore and interact with the other resident cat(s) on a limited basis. Watch to see what happens. Does your resident cat accept the newbie or growl and hiss? Grooming the new cat is a great sign, but don't assume that all will be well all the time. Continue the limited interactions until there are no signs of dislike.

With time and patience, you will have a wonderful fur buddy for your resident cat(s). Provide praise, treats and reassurance that the resident cat(s) will always be number one in the house. With this you have just succeeded! ENJOY! As always, don't forget to look for a new piece of cat furniture for your new resident.

Why Do Cats Like Catnip? PDF Print E-mail
For those of us who have cats and offered up that catnip "toy" we often become amazed at the cat's reaction. However, let us take a look as to the science behind the behavior.

Catnip is a perennial herb and member of the Mint family Labiatae. It is native to Europe & Asia and most recently became a wild plant in North America. Catnip is also known by the following names: Catmint, Catnep, Catrup, Cat's Heal All, Cat's-play, Cat's Wort, Catswort, Garden Nep.

The active ingredient which causes this is an essential oil called "nepetalactone", which can be found in the leaves and stem of the plant. When a cat encounters catnip, it usually sniffs it, rubs against it, licks it & eventually may eat it. Even cats who can't smell well will respond to Catnip. It is the sniffing that produces the "high". The "high" produced will usually last between five & ten minutes. Catnip is not harmful to your cat. They will not overdose on it. Most cats know when they've had enough & will refuse any further offers. Each cat reacts differently. One cat may run throughout your house, another may become lazy and others may go on the rampage looking to attack something or someone close. It is a crazy thing to watch and often a cat will act differently with each encounter.

Catnip is usually fairly easy to grow, you should be able to purchase the plant from your local garden center. It likes light sandy soil, and grows best in full sun. Most pet shops either sell catnip toys, or dried catnip. Store dried catnip put it in an air tight container. Then place the container in the refrigerator or freezer. To dry fresh catnip, hang upside down in a dry, ventilated area, away from the sun.

So, go ahead and indulge your cat in some catnip! Perhaps, hang it from a cat perch or put it on your new cat house and watch your pet companion enthusiastically go after the prize!
